Thule 460R, AeroBlades on BMW 3series

CLOSE UP OF BMW 3 SERIES WITH THULE 460R & AEROBLADESThule AeroBlades and Ski Rack

At our Rack Attack Coquitlam store we love to match cars up with the quality Thule car racks we sell. Take for example this beautiful German-made sports coupe what better roof rack match can you have then the 460R that mounts right into the factory mounting spots. To top it off we were able to get a hold of a couple sets of pre release shipment of the NEW Thule AeroBlades. Not only does the curves of the new AeroBlade match well with the body lines of the BMW 3 series is can save your ears by 13 decibels and your wallet as well. The New AeroBlade reduces drag up to 55% over your old Yakima round bar or the Thule square bar. So based on a person  driving 15K miles a year that can save you about $100 in gas/year depending on the cost of gas. I personally found even with going with a Yakima system on my car with a fairing ($95-$100 that costs about the same as upgrading to the AeroBlade) the AeroBlade still had way less wind noise. The 460/460R Podium foot pack has a fit kit that mounts right in to the factory mounts not just only on BMW’s but also the Nissan Xtrail, Subaru Impreza as well as the Mazda Protege 5/Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 just to name a few of the top of my head. Thinking about skiing or snowboarding this winter we also have you covered from both Thule and Yakima ski rack as well as Thule and Yakima ski/cargo boxes. Why spend a tone of $$$ on your gear just to get it beat up by the salt, sand, rocks and any other chemical they put on the roads to keep it clear. When is can have a safe, dry, secure ride in one of Thule or Yakima’s Cargo Boxes. Also with a cargo box it can be used year around and not just a few month out of the year.

So for any of your Car Racking needs don’t  forget to stop b(u)y and shop with the racksperts. Not only do we stock the products we can have it installed for you in about a hour.

New Thule Ski Racks At Rack Attack Coquitlam

26 09 2011

Here at Rack Attack Coquitlam we just got in a shipment of the all new Thule ski racks in. This all new line up with all new quick mounting hard ware for an easy install on your racks. Thule used a new system very close to the “450 Crossroad” tower

It uses a strap that starts in the mount and runs down around your cross bar. The strap is made of rubber coated steel strips the protects you from having some one trying to slash your ski rack off your vehicle. The new Thule racks are all so a “universal fit”  meaning they will fit almost any factory cross bar. This means you will not have to buy a whole new rack set up if you already have racks on your vehicle. The new Thule set ups come in two sizes a 4 ski and a 6 ski. also the 6 ski come with the “pull top” option it lets you pull out the ski rack from over top of the vehicle to the side so you can load your skis and snowboards with ease.

If you would like this same set up, its available for nearly every Make and Model of car.

Call or Stop by the store for Price and the specific gear you want to put on your Vehicle.

New Stuff from Thule: Thule Aero Blade now available at Rack Attack Coquitlam

23 09 2011

Thule wasn’t the first kid on the Block to come out with the Thule Aeroblade style wingbar but man did they every do it right.  The fit and finish is very nice and it’s great that it will work with any of the Thule rapid bar foot packs like 450R, 460R, 480R, 430R and even the older 400XTR. Being the owner of  a Nissan Frontier and ended up installing the Thule 450R with the Aeroblade and what an improvement over the reg 450 square bars or the 450R with 47″RB bar. I was also able to go one  size bigger from a 47″ to a 53″ as the new AeroBlade has a longer grove on the bottom of the bar for the towers to slide. Yahoo! I can now carry my car topper boat or a couple of kayaks without having to go with the loud regular lb58″ square bar. I found that the Thule AeroBlade was not only a lot stronger than the factory Nissan Frontier rack it’s also less noisy.

Also the new AreoBlade has some of the best technology built into it including:

  • WindDiffuser™ is a textured surface on the t-slot cover that disturbs the airflow better than a smooth surface, greatly reducing wing noise.
  • BoxBeam™ – The sophisticated BoxBeam aluminum extrusion creates one of the strongest load bars in the market. Using a vertical load test, the AeroBlade can sustain over 800 lbf of force.
  • SmartSlide™ – The new SmartSlide™ is a molded measurement system providing a quick, no-hassle, tapemeasure-free foot installation. SmartSlide™ also covers the underbar slot to improve aerodynamics and noise diffusion.
  • SwingBlade™ – The new SwingBlade™ end cap pivots open to allow full access to the t-slot for easy accessory installs.

Also a nice piece of information even though the AeroBlade come in about $100 or so more than a regular Thule square or RB bar in about 15,000 KM of driving (average person drives that in a year) that rack save that for you  in gas.  Or even if you went with the Thule square bar with a fairing you would still be about at the same price as the AeroBlade system, so it’s a  no brainer spend the little bit now and it will be music to your ears rather that a howl or whistling scream of a Yakima round or Thule Square bar.

Jeep Wrangler With A Boxter and Whispbar Mounted On A Track.

15 09 2011

Here at Rack Attack Coquitlam we like to think that we can put a rack on just about anything. A common problem for vehicles that come with fiberglass roofs  (EX: a tent trailer, or canopy for a truck) is that there is usually no options coming directly from the factory for racks. One of the most common vehicles to come with a fiberglass roof would be the Jeep Wrangler our rack experts have a solid yet simple way to mount roof racks or tracks on to fiberglass tops.

We mounted a 60″ track on this jeep wrangler and attached a set of the all new Whispbar just released under Yakima. The Whispbar is the arguably one of the quietest roof racks on the market. On top of the Whispbar racks we have a Thule Boxter, the Boxter is one of the most solid cargo boxes ever created. With steel bar reinforcement on the bottom end and a reenforced lid to help cut down on wind noise and help keep the box structurally sound at high speeds.  The extremely quite Whispbar combined with the strength of the boxer and the Yakima track mounted to the roof  gives the ability to carry about 110 pounds of cargo inside the box.

To mount the track to the fiberglass roof we don’t use the regular hardware we would for mounting a track onto a sheet metal roof. We use small wing nobs to secure the track down guaranteeing a leak free fit for any fiberglass roof. The wing nobs also give you a clean fit on the inside of the jeep, you have several small wing nobs running the length of the track. This is a much better option instead of running bulky nuts and washers that would run the distance of the track.

At our Rack Attack Coquitlam store we have over 15 cargo boxes on display at any given time and more than 20-30 different sizes, colours, and shapes to fit anything from a Smart car to a stretched expedition limousine.

Ford Fiesta 2011 with Thule 480R Traverse Foot Pack

9 09 2010

Ford Fiesta 2011 with Thule 480 traverse and Thule 594xt Side Arm

The 2011 Ford Fiesta just came out in the Canadian Market and since we work with a lot of dealerships we had a chance to Rack Attack it up with the Thule 480R Traverse. Luckily Thule is designed in Sweden so since the Fiesta has been over there since 2008 Thule already has a great fitting roof rack for it. We decided to go with the nicer looking Thule Foot pack 480R that comes with the Alumium Aero bars vs the 480 with the regular square bars. Also the new 480R/480 is a lot easier to install and is an updated version of the old 400xt/400xtr counter part. The Ford dealer was wanting to carry a high-end bikes so we recommended the Thule Side Arm that has a Alumium tray as well so they compliment each other well. The Thule Side Arm (XT)  comes as the (594XT) so it comes with the mounting not only for round and square bars like older non XT versions but with a universal mount that fits the Thule Aero bar and most factory bars out of the box! Yahoo no more paying for extra adaptors or having to retro fit racks to fit aero bars or factory racks.

Rack Attack had a customer that came in and was looking at the most possibilities and the highest weight ratings. Going with the 42″ track and Thule 430 towers with the TK1 kit gave the customer the most versatility. Doesn’t matter if it’s carrying gear, canoes, bike racks,  ski/snowboard racks, you  can do it all! The Thule 690 M.O.A.B. = mother of all baskets, can carry a hole whack of gear. Heck even if you have too much stuff on your bars and basket the basket even comes with Thule bars to mount more stuff onto it! So that means you can mount stuff, onto your stuff, then that stuff mounts to that stuff, which then mounts to your Jeep. Which is good stuff, because the Jeeps don’t carry much stuff! And if you still have more stuff then you can get a hitch on the Jeep then mount a Terrapin to carry even more of your stuff.

The Thule TP42 tracks can be order with hardwear to fit Jeep roofs.

Yakima Landing pad installation: We get quite a few inquiries about how this process is done. We take the Yakima load bars and loosely install the control towers onto the bar. Then you can attach the Landing pad 6 or 7 base’s depending if it’s a metal or fiberglass roof. With the roof clean we then do a mock up where we would like the rack to sit. At Rack Attack we usually mount the front bar about 5-7” from the edge of the front windshield and the bar spread (distance between bars) anywhere from 24”-36”. Ideally it should be between 30-34” as it will fit the most accessories at this spread. Then ideally you want to mount the towers out wards as much as possible about a 1/8-1/4” in from the two rain gutter strips on the roof. Once the rack is all set up where you would like it to be you can use a punch to mark where it is going to be drilled. Use a pilot bit first about 1/8” is good size then use the bit it recommends in the instructions Landing Pad 6/7. We use a Rota bit, which drills a perfectly round hole, but you can also use a normal drill bit. Blow away any metal shavings then use some touch up paint on the bare metal. Proceed to put the Landing Pad 7 insert into the roof. And put a nice bead of silicon around the fastener and into the mounting hard wear. Last step is just tightening the LP6/LP7 bases to the roof then the control towers to the bases. And if you did purchase the locks just pop the plug out and line up the pin with the hole and turn to lock

Frequently asked Questions!

Q) How do I know what base’s to order?

A) If you are drilling into a metal roof use Landing Pad 7’s.

Found Here: http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/yakima-landing-pad-7.asp

If it is a canopy or camper top (fiberglass) you will want to use Landing Pad 6’s.

Found Here: http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/yakima-landing-pad-6.asp

Q) What if I hit another layer of metal or a brace?

A) You will want to drill through that as well. (But not the headliner so use tape or a drill stop) If the second layer obstructs the fastener use a punch to push it out of the way of the fastener

Q) Do I have to remove the headliner to install landing pads?

A) No, that’s one advantage of using the LP7’s they use what is called a blind fastener.

Q) Is there anything else I should know before I start?

A) Make sure you read the instructions fully before starting and give Rack Attack a call if you are uncertain about installation. It’s better to do that then be in over your head half way through and we a closed by then.

Q) Any last minute tips before I start?

A) Always measure 3 times and drill once.

Dodge Nitro

25 04 2009

nitro-with-cap-rack-002nitro-with-cap-rack-001Here’s a Dodge Nitro with the Thule 342 Cap Rack. The cap rack was mainly designed to be used on the top of a canopy but at Rack Attack we can custom install racks on just about anything.  This Thule 342 Cap Rack was picked for the customer wanted to carry ladders for work during the week and a car topper fishing boat on the weekends. Some great add-ons from Thule are Thule 349 Quick Clamp Locking Ladder Holder and the Thule 316 Roller can be used for loading ladders or to help roll up a boat onto the roof..
